Optimise your home Wi-Fi

Connecting numerous devices to your home Wi-Fi and optimising signal strength so that all areas of your home get good Wi-Fi coverage can be frustrating. At Ffibr Cyf, we understand the challenges of modern home connectivity.

This page is designed to help you get the most out of your Ffibr Cyf broadband, ensuring seamless streaming, working, and gaming in every corner of your home.

Our top Wi-Fi optimisation tips

Unlock the full potential of your Ffibr Cyf broadband with these practical tips and solutions. Improve your Wi-Fi performance, reduce dead zones, and enjoy a faster, more reliable connection throughout your home.

Optimise router placement

The location of your router significantly impacts your Wi-Fi performance. Place your router in the most central part of your home to ensure signals spread evenly. Elevate it on a shelf or mount it on a wall, ideally at eye level or higher, as Wi-Fi signals tend to spread downwards. Avoid hiding it in cabinets, behind TVs, or near large mirrors or fish tanks, as these can obstruct or absorb the signal.

Reduce interference & choose the right band

Interference from neighbouring Wi-Fi networks and other electronics can degrade your signal. Utilise the 5GHz (or 6GHz if your router supports Wi-Fi 6E/7) band for devices like gaming consoles, smart TVs, and laptops for faster speeds and less congestion. Reserve the 2.4GHz band for smart home devices further from the router. You can also log into your router settings and manually change the 2.4GHz channel to 1, 6, or 11 to avoid overlap. Keep your router at least 1-1.5 metres away from other electronics to minimise electrical noise.

Use wired connections for stationary devices

For maximum stability and speed, always opt for wired connections where possible. Connect stationary devices like desktop PCs, gaming consoles, and smart TVs directly to your router using Ethernet cables. This frees up valuable wireless bandwidth for your mobile devices. If running cables isn't feasible, consider Powerline adapters, which use your home's existing electrical wiring to transmit internet to a distant room.

Regular router restarts

Periodically restarting your router can resolve many common Wi-Fi issues. This simple step helps clear temporary glitches and refreshes your network's performance. Consider setting a reminder to restart your router weekly to maintain optimal performance.
